文中の「in my company」は普通は「私といっしょに」と翻訳されますが、ここでは、「私と連れ立って」の方が良いと思うのです。
「with me」ではなく「in my company」を使っているのは、結婚で疎遠になっていたワトソンが、再びホームズのところに頻繁に訪れて、ホームズの相棒として２話、３話・・と事件を解決していくことを示唆しているのではないでしょうか。
シャーロック・ホームズにとって彼女がいつでも「 THE woman 」なのは、アイリーン・アドラーと面と向かって会ったことはなく、馬屋の男たちから聞いた情報だったり、どさくさ紛れでチラリとぐらいしか見ていない謎多く不確かな記憶なので、「 THE 」を付けるほど明確ではなく、アイリーン・アドラーの写真が見えるところにある時だけしか THE woman と言えなかったからではないかと思うのです。
このことは、ホームズが王が差し出した高価な指輪よりも価値があるとして受け取った写真をどこかにしまっているのではなく、写真立てなどに入れていつも見えるところに置いていることを示唆しているのではないでしょうか。
だから名誉ある称号の下にあるのだと思います。
これは、ホームズがアイリーン・アドラーを自分を出し抜いた忌々しい女と思っているのではなく、
ヨーロッパいちの名探偵と自負していた自分を出し抜いたアッパレな人物として一目置いていると言うことではないでしょうか。
話の流れは、強引な感じのするところもありますが、the woman で始まり、the woman で終わるという、英語ならではの粋な
作品だなと・・。
